Any car rentals in Albania for tourists?
#1
From what I understand, Albania's really pushing tourism hard right now. Don't know why they didn't focus on it earlier, the country's right on the coast, they've got historical sites from centuries back plus all that communist-era architecture people are curious about. Good thing they're finally doing something with it. I'm thinking of going there for vacation to see how much the tourist scene has actually developed. Main question though, do they have car rentals there? I'm used to driving myself around everywhere I go.

The country spent decades trying to recover from switching out of a planned economy, that's probably why. Kosovo conflict hit them hard too even though they weren't directly involved, so tourism was the last thing on anyone's mind back then. Now things have stabilized and they're actually investing in the industry. Yeah, car rentals exist there, you'll find options in the bigger cities like Tirana and along the coast. Just make sure you're cool with mountain roads and some questionable driving habits from the locals, it's not like cruising through Western Europe.

Albanian drivers are a whole different breed, that's for sure. Lane lines are more like suggestions and everyone's in a rush to get nowhere. The rental scene there is pretty hit or miss honestly. A lot of the agencies have limited selections and the cars aren't always in great shape, you might get something with a dent or two and scratchy interiors. You can rent a car in Albania here https://getrentacar.com/en-US/albania . Check out private owners instead of the big chains, they usually take way better care of their vehicles and you're not getting something that's been beaten up by a hundred tourists before you. Plus they'll actually give you real advice about where to drive and what roads to avoid instead of just handing you keys and wishing you luck.
