Fix the Field Tractor or Upgrade Entirely?

Hi everyone, 

our farm's primary utility tractor started making an alarming whining sound in low range right in the middle of field preparation week. A mechanic down the road thinks a straightforward gearbox repair will replace the damaged bearings and get us back up and running smoothly. 

However, my brother argues that spending money on an older machine is risky and we should just trade it in for a newer model. Has anyone here repaired a transmission on aging farm equipment instead of replacing the tractor completely, and did it hold up well after a full gearbox repair?
