So I'm coming up to the end of my factory warranty on my 2019 A5 Sportback and I'm trying to decide whether to shell out for an extended warranty or just take my chances and put the money aside for potential repairs. The car has been absolutely rock solid since I bought it, no issues at all, and I've looked after it properly with all the scheduled maintenance done on time. But I know these ZF transmissions can be expensive to fix if something goes wrong, and I've read enough horror stories on here to know that a mechatronic failure or clutch pack replacement can run into the tens of thousands. The extended warranty quotes I'm getting are around 5,000 AED per year, which isn't cheap but would obviously be worth it if I end up needing a major transmission repair. I'm trying to weigh up whether the peace of mind is worth the cost, or whether I'd be better off just putting that money into a savings account and self-insuring against potential issues. I've been looking at some specialist sites like auditransmissionrepair.ae/ to get an idea of what common repairs actually cost, and it seems like while a full rebuild is expensive, it's not something that happens to every car and maybe I'm worrying unnecessarily. I guess I'm wondering what most people actually do when their warranty runs out, do you pay for the extended coverage or do you take the risk and hope for the best? I'm leaning towards just saving the money myself because I hate paying for insurance I might never use, but I also don't want to be kicking myself if something goes wrong six months after the warranty expires. Would love to hear from people who've been in this position and what decision you made, and whether you regret it either way.
