Gearbox slips when I climb the bridge, rebuild or replace?
#1
Three days ago my Infiniti did something that gave me a real fright, and since then I cannot think about anything else. I drive a 2014 FX37 with about 156,000 kilometers, and I was going up the bridge near my office when the engine suddenly screamed but the car did not move forward like it should. The needle went up, the speed stayed the same, and then after two seconds it jumped forward with a hard bump. It felt like someone kicked the car from behind. Since then it also takes a moment to move when I shift from park to drive, almost like it is thinking about it. My brother says it is the end of the car and I should sell it as it is. My neighbor says it might only be old oil and a filter, and some garages fix that for small money. I really do not know who to believe, and I am a bit scared of walking into a workshop because I have heard stories about people paying for a full new gearbox when the problem was small. So I started reading at night. I found a page from a workshop in Mussafah that explained how the transmission passes power from the engine to the wheels, and it said things like slipping, delayed shifting, burnt smell and dirty fluid can be early signs. It also explained that some problems come from sensors or the control unit and not the gearbox itself, which was new to me. I checked my dipstick area as best I could and the fluid looked darker than I expected, maybe a bit brown, but I do not know what it should look like. Money is tight right now because I just paid my kids school fees, so I typed Affordable Infiniti transmission repair in Musaffah on my phone, hoping to understand the price range before I call anyone. All I found was big talk and no real numbers. So I wanted to ask people who have been through this. How do you tell the difference between a small fix and a full rebuild? Can a fluid change help or is it dangerous on a car with high kilometers? I heard that sometimes it makes the problem worse. Is there a proper test like a scan or a road test that shows what is wrong before they open anything? And how long does the car stay in the shop, because I need it every day for work? Also, is it better to rebuild the old gearbox or buy a used one, and does the work come with any warranty? If you drove with a slipping gearbox for a while, did it get worse fast? Please share your story, even if it was a bad one. Thank you.
